Jemi Fraser is the first to admit she’s a quirky person who doesn’t fit the mold -
any mold (and that’s ‘mould’ to those not in America or Canada) but she's a jewel of a writer, starting out with that certain ‘something’: a jingle in her attitude and a jubilant support for aspiring writers around her. There’s no way this lady is gonna be a jobless author!
Aspiring writer of Contemporary Romance with Happy Ever Afters, take it away Jemi:
Are there cowboys or country manors in any of your stories?
Cowboys!! A group of hot and handsome cowboys will appear in one of the series I plan on publishing soon. I’ve got 2 series in the works and this one will feature the Hawkins family and their Silent K ranch out in Montana (sounds like my cup of tea - coffee for those in Canada and the US). My other series is set in a small fishing/tourist town in Vermont so no country manors. Not yet anyway!
Forget the country manor - I’ll take the cowboy. And Vermont … Oh, wonderful Vermont - when will I visit thee? (Sorry, got poetic there for a second.)
Will you tell us about yourself and what genre(s) you love writing?
I’m an elementary school teacher (LOVE my job!!) up in Northern Ontario. I squeeze my writing time in when I’m not working, prepping for work or playing with my family. I write contemporary romance. I love those HEAs (Happy Ever Afters). I think I’m drawn to the genre because of them. I’ve worked with so many kids over the years who have such difficult lives – bringing a little bit of happy and hope to the world doesn’t seem like a bad idea.
Now that’s an excellent take on a subject (Romance) some people find difficult to understand!
What writing project did you put aside to answer these questions?
Currently I’m working on the first novel in my Blue Moose series. It’s been through a couple rounds with my crit buddies and it’s getting closer to being ready for my editor! I’m hoping to have it out and about in the world later on this year. It combines fudge, a car bomb, a stalker, the fishing town and of course, a very hot hero! :)
Phew - turn the air-con up, would you?
Are you fun to go on holiday with?
Depends. I’m not one for beaches and hot climates (high temps make me pass out *sigh*) but if you want to watch some sporting events (tennis, hockey, baseball...), check out galleries/museums/local sites and do a lot of walking then I’m
Personally, I’d be happy to skip the holiday and curl up on the sofa with your stories.
Will you name one entity you feel supports you outside of family members?
I stumbled onto Agent Query Connect http://agentqueryconnect.com/ a few years back. I’d written a couple of novels (and I use the term loosely) for fun, but I had never thought at all about actually attempting to publish. AQC changed that. I met so many incredible people (including my amazing crit buddies) who were willing to help and teach and guide. I had no idea how much I didn’t know. I didn’t know about agents or queries or dialogue tags or show don’t tell or backstory or … pretty much anything. Now I feel I’m almost ready to put my stories out into the world.
Oh, Jemi! You’re my favourite (favorite) kind of writer - ready for it!
What was/is the hardest part of writing your book?
Revising! I love that first draft when all my thoughts zip out of my head. I love the slash & burn editing stage where I get to tighten those phrases and polish it up. But figuring out when/how/why to rearrange plot points, characters and
scenes can drive me up the wall!
I’m your sister on that one, Jemi. I can drive myself nuts figuring out when/how/why.
Gosh - I’m almost speechless (unusual, I know). Jemi has such verve and determination - what a winning combination. Can I just say, here and now - I met her first! I knew her ‘when’!
Don’t only follow her blog Just Jemi - follow her From the Write Angle blog too. This is one smart writer with a generous heart and soul - what better kind of writer (and person) could any of us wish to be?
